Text hearts take the color of the text around them, which is why they show up in usernames and game names. We add an invisible text-style selector (U+FE0E) to ❤︎ and ❣︎ to request text presentation. The receiving app ultimately controls rendering.

Text symbols
Single Unicode characters drawn by ordinary fonts. They come in one color and match your text, so they suit usernames, game names, Word documents and anywhere emoji are blocked.
Emojis
Your device's emoji font draws these, so Apple, Google, Samsung and Windows each show their own artwork. They are colorful, but on older systems a new heart can appear as an empty box □.
Look-alikes & kaomoji
Built from letters and marks of other scripts. They look great in aesthetic bios, but screen readers read them out character by character, so keep them out of important text.

№ 10FAQ
Questions about heart symbols
Need a quick answer? Start with the text, emoji and keyboard notes below.
Why does my heart show up black instead of red?
♥ (U+2665) and ❤ (U+2764) are text characters, so many apps draw them in the current text color. A red ❤️ is the same character followed by an invisible emoji selector (U+FE0F). Copy the ❤️ from the Heart Emojis section to get the red version.
Why do I see a box instead of a heart?
Your device or app may not have a font for that character. Newer hearts such as 🩷 🩵 🩶 need updated emoji support. Try a system update or use the simpler ♥ or ♡ text symbols.
How do I type a heart symbol on a keyboard?
On Windows, Alt+3 on the numeric keypad works in many apps; behavior depends on the app and keyboard. In Microsoft Word, type 2665 and press Alt+X. On a Mac, open Character Viewer with Control+Command+Space and search for heart. On phones, use the emoji keyboard.
Are these heart symbols free to use?
These hearts are standard Unicode text characters. You can copy and paste them into apps that accept them. Emoji artwork and individual fonts may have their own licenses; copying text does not copy those image or font files.
